LOSE FAT FAST! ONE WEEK TRANSFORMATION! FAT BURNING 101!
You’ve probably been bombarded with this kind of messaging for a while now and it’s time to put a stop to misinformation. When it comes to weight loss and fitness journeys the internet is full of opinions, stories and people that have platforms to share their thoughts and experiences. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this, but there’s one thing you need to remember; everybody is different! When there’s a million different techniques and methods being thrown at you, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with information. We’ve put together the most important things you should know and the top 5 weight loss myths that NEED to be busted.
Don’t eat at night, you’ll get fat!
Heard this one before? We decided to put this one first because a surprising amount of people promote a diet focused around this theory. This idea is ignoring one important factor: basal metabolic rate. Your BMR is the number of calories that your body uses purely just to function, during a 24-hour window. So, even at rest, your body is still using up calories to keep you alive.
So, it’s not so much about WHEN you eat, but about what and how much you eat.
If you eat just before bed, but you’re still within your target calorie intake or calorie deficit, you’ll be fine! However, if you eat way over your desired intake, you probably will gain weight. If you happened to have a busy day and didn't get the time to eat lunch, don’t even think about skipping your meal because ‘it’s too late’. Your body needs fuel no matter what time of day it is. This isn’t an excuse to wake up at 1 AM and down an entire tub of ice cream (although some occasions may call for this). Just keep this in mind next time someone tells you to skip dinner and wait for the morning.
Go on a juice cleanse, you’ll lose weight for good!
Not only are juice cleanses ridiculously expensive, but they most likely will not produce long-term results. A 3 day ANYTHING, is an extremely temporary way to put your body in a calorie deficit and lose weight (temporarily!). During the ‘detox’ you are depriving your body of essential nutrients, which is why many people feel they have no energy during a fast. The only thing you’ll be losing is water weight and energy.
Typically, the juices are made from fruits and vegetables which of course, is quite healthy. Juices are a great way to get in your leafy greens, which is why you should introduce them into your regular diet. Going on a juice cleanse is not the best way to form healthy and consistent eating habits. You might find yourself being disappointed after a week post juice cleanse when you realise you’ve put the weight back on. When it comes to juice cleansing, try incorporating juices instead of going all out for 3 days. Your healthy eating will be far more likely to stick if you do this.
You MUST cut out ALL carbs!
Bread makes you fat? Not today Regina.
Carbohydrates are extremely important for your overall health for a variety of reasons, the one main being energy. Carbs are your bodies main source of energy! If you cut out carbs, you’re essentially running on an empty tank. If you’re trying to lose weight and you’re smashing killer workouts at the gym, you need carbs to fuel your body during the process.
Starchy carbs are also a great source of fibre, which can help with digestive issues. They also contain fewer calories per gram than fat. So, if you’re thinking of cutting carbs, take a look at the rest of your diet. If you start replacing sugary, processed foods with high fibre starchy carbs, you’re giving your body a better foundation for health and weight loss.
Skipping breakfast helps you lose weight
The idea behind this claim is that because you’re skipping breakfast, you’re eating fewer calories due to skipping a meal. However, in many cases NOT eating breakfast is just postponing the calories you would have eaten anyway. Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast have healthier eating habits than those who skip it. Many people use skipping breakfast as an excuse to eat whatever they want later in the day. Like we previously discussed, it’s not so much about when you eat but about what you eat and how much of it.
It is far more important to build consistent and healthy eating habits, that make you feel good. Skipping breakfast typically leads to lower energy levels during the day and you might find yourself binging when you get home. Do what works for you and what helps you form the best habits. Getting to know your strengths and weaknesses is so important! But don’t just not eat breakfast because the internet told you so.
